Treasurer Smith Spreads Awareness of IAble for ABLE to Save Month

April 9, 2024

DES MOINES, Iowa – This April, State Treasurer Roby Smith is taking part in the ABLE to Save Month campaign by educating Iowans about IAble, the state’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) plan. “IAble has been helping individuals with disabilities protect crucial benefits, without jeopardizing their need to save money, for over seven years now,” Smith said. “Still, there are some who don’t know what it is. This is the perfect opportunity to change that.”

ABLE to Save Month is a national education and outreach campaign dedicated to spreading the word about the benefits of ABLE accounts. “As part of IAble’s campaign, we partnered with the Iowa DD Council to provide another free webinar about the Plan on April 2,” said Smith. “We heard from real Account Owners on their experiences and covered important topics like eligibility, ABLE to Work, savings options and more.” Watch a recording of the webinar at IAble.gov/resources/about-us/webinars.

IAble is a financial tool Eligible Individuals and their support systems can to use to save money for short- and long-term goals. When placed in an IAble account, the money is protected from the $2,000 asset cap placed on Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and other means-tested benefits. Savings and earnings can be used for transportation, housing, food, funeral and burial expenses, assistive technology and other Qualified Disability Expenses.

“Help us celebrate this campaign by sharing the webinar with those you think might want to learn more,” Smith concluded. “Together, we can all be powerful advocates for IAble and help our friends in the disability community achieve their best life experience!”
